Meet my dear friend - Palmarosa... / by Kristine Pregot

I can’t quite recall how I was drawn to this precious Deva. But, I can’t imagine my life with out her. She has brought me immense comfort, healing, joy and a sense of confidence that is out of this world!! She is here to support and transform ones Body, Mind & Spirit. She is a hard worker and will do what it takes to get the job done properly, efficiently with compassion and grace. Because of her thoughtful and analgesic qualities, she knows where she needs to ‘work.’. Palmarosa grass is an aromatic, densely tufted, perennial grass which is native to southeast Asia.

Historically, the first attempt at its cultivation dates back to 1924 in West Punjab. Later, its cultivation in India was started in the early 1950s in Dehra Dun (Uttarakhand). Currently, the cop is cultivated in several statesin India. India enjoyed a virtual monopoly in Palarosa oil production until the 1990’s. Oil of Palmarosa is one of the most important essential oils of India that is exported. (Essential Oil-Bearing Grasses: The genus Cymbopogon. Anand Akhila p. 163) Palmarosa Oil is obtained from flowering shoots and aboveground parts of the motia oil of high geraniol content which is also called East Indian geranium or Rosha Oil.”  She is picked as a long grass before her flower has blossomed. She is picked with she is full of nutrients.

The essential oil has a scent similar to that of rose oil and hence the name palmarosa. Once know as Turkish Geranium or Indian Geranium, Palmarosa was used for centuries by the Turks to adulterate the more costly Turkish Rose Oil (Connie Higley p. 111) Oil of Pamaroa is generally obtained by steam or hydrodistillation. It takes 2 hours to complete on distillation. Allowing the cut grass to wilt in the shade for 24 hours during premonsoon months and 48 hours during the postmonsoon increases the oil recovery. Small Cultivators use direct – fire stills. During the steam distillation, a party of the essential becomes dissolved in the condensate or distillation water and is lost when this water is discarded.

Palmarosa is widely used in Ayurvedic skin care. It is good for all skin types because it is a cellular stimulator and supports all cell regulation. It’s highly antiseptic, calming, uplifting and anti-depressive. (Ayurveda and Aromatherapy’, Light Miller) Skin: I have had a life long struggle with ACNE. Since college I may have tried every man made chemical created to try to ‘heal’ my skin. Nothing worked. Over time my self esteem diminished and I could think of nothing else, but my horrible and painful skin. Although yoga and meditation helped me cope – I felt nothing but defeated. Through the years, I have finally discovered it is an allergy to dairy. However, the long and winding road leading to that personal discovery was deep and dark. I still do get occasional outbreaks & I would sink back into the void hole of despair.  That is until my dear friend Palmarosa has showed up into my life. Her scent is complex but very refreshing. First you may recognize a lemon grass sent, then a citronella. But, then she has hints that are familiar to geranium. She could even be mistaken for that of Rose, if smelled in the right light. She brings a tingle to your skin when applied.  You can feel her immediately getting straight to work. She goes deep into your pores and then goes even deeper and gets to work in the vessels under your skin. She brings fresh life and new life force energy directly into your bloodstream. She has been harvested as a long grass before she flowers. She is a proud receiver of the Sun’s loving energy and she wants to carry out and bring that her special vibration with whom she is here to heal.

I personally include her in my daily and nightly ritual. She has become a solid friend that I look forward to connecting with at the completion and start of each day. After washing my face – My heart opens up as it gets ready for sweet Palmarosa. I apply a few drops neat to face and then the loving massage begins. I work her into my face and do gentle loving strokes upwards. She wants to be worked with gently and with love. Leave the heavy duty work for her. She works with a strong sense of joy which is infectious. After this daily ritual my skin is not only feeling fresh tingly and revived but the sebum on my face is balanced and happy. She will go into any blemish and immediately work on fighting it with love and compassion. Fighting acne is not her only strength. She leaves a sweet moisture on your skin that is light but perfect. I rarely require an additional moisturizer (except for my beloved Rose Hip Seed, under my eyes). The soft sweet dew she leaves on your skin not only smells sweet and fresh but you can feel her, gently, working for you. The strong and Palmarosa is not only here to make you LOOK fabulous. She is here to make you FEEL fabulous, too. Palmarosa is valuable for all types of skin problems because it stimulates new cell growth, regulates oil production, moisturizes and speeds healing.

Digestion: Palmarosa will also aid in digestion. She works with your digestive system to bring new oxygen and create movement. She helps to stimulate the whole digestive flow. Bringing you ease and grace back into ‘the 2nd brain’ – your intuitive brain; your GUT. When applied to your solar plexus region – she will go deep inside to stimulate blood in your organs. She slowly works her way into your colon to help to stimulate the cells aid in a complete new energy to you intestines. She has helped me though many though times. I know that my skin issues can be directly linked to my digestion. When she is used directly after I eat something I should not have. She helps. Not to mention she also helps to prevent potential painful (and embarrassing gas).

MIND: She brings me tremendous clarity. She sets the perfect tone and prepares me for my daily meditations. Her vibration has a frequency that allows me to drop every thought / feeling that I do not need. She harnesses my attention of clarity and allows me to come to total peace and concentration during my mediations. She has revitalized me and helped me to combat the daily stresses of living in NYC and having a very hectic lifestyle. She creates the space for ‘stimulated’ but a very focused state of being. SPIRIT: Palmarosa does something for my spirit and goes deeper than any other ‘product’ has been able to do. Her strong and unscrupulous work ethic has influenced my soul to work harder. She has inspired me to be a better person and to work hard, yet to work with my divine feminine essence to do work harder. Work with compassion, work with grace and work with complete integrity. She has given me an inner confidence that I had no idea this could come in a bottle. She directs me to hold my head up high and love my self deeper with more respect than I ever have before. She reminds me to be conscious in every waking moment and inspires me to work with more strong grace.

MIND + BODY + SPIRIT - HEALER Palmarosa is a divine beauty that I will work with for the rest of my life. She feels like an ancestor who I love to commune with. I can’t image her not being by my side day & night. I feel so blessed to have her by my side. Over all, she is just one dear friend of many now. My existence on this planet will never be the same. I am now connected to our plant teachers like never before. We have so much to learn from these divine creatures of god and I am delighted to be the student. I know that these plants work by receiving and opening up to the Sun’s powerful bounty and LOVE is the underlying message.
